Adult Protective Services

The primary function of Adult Protective Services is to conduct investigations on referrals of abuse, neglect, and exploitation of vulnerable, disabled adults and elder persons.

Who is Reportable?

• An “elder adult at risk” is “a person age 60 or older who has experienced, is currently experiencing, or is at risk of experiencing abuse, neglect, self-neglect, or financial exploitation.”
• An “adult at risk” is “any adult who has a physical or mental condition that substantially impairs his or her ability to care for his or her needs who has experienced, is currently experiencing, or is at risk of experiencing abuse, neglect, self-neglect or financial exploitation.”

NOTE: who can be reported is only the “top of the funnel.” What actually happens to or for that individual depends on other factors such as competence, present risk, available supports and funding.

Types of Abuse Adult Protective Services Investigates:

Self-neglect, physical, emotional abuse and financial exploitation.
