The Investigative Division is led by Captain David Poteat who has been with the Brown County Sheriff’s Office since 1998. Prior to serving the citizens of Brown County, he served in the U.S. Army from 1990 to 1995 as a Counterintelligence Special Agent. Captain Poteat began his career with the Sheriff’s Office in the patrol division. He was assigned to the Brown County Drug Task Force (BCDTF) as a Narcotics Investigator and later as the Evidence Sergeant. He was promoted to Lieutenant and served as Director of the Brown County Drug Task Force from December 2009 until March 2016 when he was promoted to Captain. Captain Poteat led the Professional Standards Division before being assigned to his current position as the Captain of the Investigative Division. Captain Poteat is also a polygraph examiner for the Sheriff’s Office.
The Investigative Division consists of both Sworn and Civilian Employees. These positions include:
