July 20, 2023 - First Harvest Celebration at Keller Elementary School

Keller Elementary Food Garden HarvestThis July, FoodWIse participated in the first harvest celebration at the Keller Elementary School Food Garden. The garden is currently growing potato plants, radishes, beans, spinach, bok choy, tomatoes, and herbs. Some of the produce was distributed to Keller families and to House of Hope.

The Food Garden is part of a collaboration between the Brown County FoodWIse program, garden mentor and volunteer Crystal, and the amazing staff at Keller Elementary School.

The Brown County FoodWIse program was the recipient of a Food Garden Grant that helps to fund projects supporting the success of the Keller Elementary Food Garden. The funding helps to sustain the garden for future learning, and to increase the diversity of produce grown to better represent the cultural preference of Keller Elementary’s students and families.

Brown County FoodWIse, in collaboration with a garden mentor and volunteer, has taught garden-based nutrition education at Keller Elementary since 2019.

School gardens can provide students with food that improves diet and nutrition, create a space for hands-on learning, and provide a learning opportunity to connect nutrition, environmental stewardship, and tangible skills for the future.

Brown County FoodWIse is so appreciative of the support from Crystal, garden mentor and volunteer, and the staff at Keller Elementary. We are excited about this great partnership and looking forward to the upcoming harvest dates.
