August 4, 2021 - Life Form Art Installation is Open!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Life Form art installation is open!
Green Bay, WI—August 4, 2021— Life Form is an installation by local textile artist Stacey Burkhart. As a "Community Engaged Artist" for the Wisconsin Tele-Stories Project run by TimeSlips, she made weekly phone calls with nine elders in the Green Bay and Wausau areas. Stacey had the task of presenting "beautiful questions" to engage their minds and hear their stories. "Beautiful questions" are a facet of the Timeslips program.
During the 8-week process, Stacey created 70 pennants from repurposed vintage textiles bearing connections to each elder's story. Every pennant displays a short, simple, four-letter word, representing key points during their conversations. Each word is only used once, but words often crossed over into the stories of others. Some of these words can take on different meanings. Without knowing the memories, the elders shared, the artist provides space for the viewer to imagine their own. This project was made possible by a grant provided by the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies in partnership with Aroha Philanthropies, and through the work of the Wisconsin Arts Board.
Life Form will be on display in the Discovery Room from August 4 through November 7, 2021.
